An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

Several of other platform users also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
