The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
