The Trump movement's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a form of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the determined opposition against Trump arise in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests.
