Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
